Community leaders increase visibility in schools

Principal and pupils welcome community leaders interventions

On September 22, community leaders representing various community organisations such as the Local Drug Action Committee(LDAC), resolved to visit a number of schools identified as being beset with disciplinary and behavioural problems.

A visit to Missouri Avenue Secondary School on the border of Extensions Six and Seven revealed the burdens placed on teachers as they battle issues on a daily basis.

The school principal, Julius van Rensburg, welcomed the delegation and said that “We would like to see intervention at work because it highlights the issues faced by the school”.

Here is what Principal Julius van Rensburg had to say:

“The school is part of the community and some of the problems within the community flow over into the school. The prevailing attitude is that teachers are the problem, and any intervention will shed light on these issues and will assist in eradicating many of the problems we face”.

Upon speaking to students, it was evident that errant pupils play truant, are rude to teachers and generally display a total disregard to the school’s code of conduct.

Far from having a negative attitude to the planned intervention, students welcomed any assistance which could alleviate the disciplinary and behavioural problems at the school.
