Update: Mother accused of burning baby!

24-year-old woman charged with concealment of birth

The case of the mother that burnt her child yesterday is currently under investigation via the Sophiatown Police Station.

Yesterday a 24-year-old woman allegedly set her child alight causing a massive outrage from residents living in Westbury.

According to warrant officer for the station Jerbes De Bruin the child was found wrapped in a blanket in 5th Avenue Westdene.

“We received a call at approximately 10.30am regarding the incident and immediately went to the scene of the crime.

“We have arrested the mother and she is currently in custody while we are awaiting autopsy results thus the baby is in the mortuary currently,” said De Bruin.

De Bruin said that the mother will be charged with concealment of birth.

Concealment of birth is when any person who, without a lawful burial order, disposes of the body of any newly born child with intent to conceal the fact of its birth, whether the child died before, during or after birth.

According to the constitution, a person may be convicted under subsection although it has not been proved that the child in question died before its body was disposed of.
