First 40 of 2000 title deeds handed to residents in Diepkloof

Herman Mashaba himself did the handing over.

Mayor Herman Mashaba was in Diepkloof to hand out title deeds specifically in Diepkloof Zone Four. One of the recipients of the title deed was gogo Anna Dikgale (70) who has been made to wait for her title deed since 2007. According to a list compiled by the Housing Department last week, there are 2000 title deeds and most are for houses occupied by residents 20 years ago.

The first 40 title deeds were handed to their rightful owners on September 13 and the process will proceed to Meadowlands and Orlando.

Dikgale said, “I had given up all hope because for the past nine years I have been going up and down for my title deed and been receiving unkempt promises.

Mashaba said, “Yesterday during my inauguration speech, I announced that my administration will ensure that thousands of title deeds are given to people so that they have the dignity of owning their homes which can be passed on to their children.”

The list the department has compiled is of the title deeds that are ready to be handed over to beneficiaries. Mashaba added, “I am deeply honored to be able to hand over a title deed to gogo Dikgale.”

Dikgale is a widow who has been living in her home since 1963. She looks after her grandchildren and great grandchildren in this home and relies on a social grant to sustain her family. Dikgale represents the story of thousands of people in this city according to toTony Taverna-Turisa of COJ.

Dikgale celebrated and ululated as other residents rejoiced with her, she said, “Herman Mashaba was in my house.”
