A dead body was found at the Langlaagte illegal mining pit

Rescue Missions are taking place at the Langlaagte illegal Mine

Residents from Riverlea and Langlaagte spoke out over the recent illegal mining operation that is taking place at the George Harrison Park in Langlaagte.

A mining operation at the mentioned park was deemed illegal and rescue missions have been taking place to get the miners out underground. SAPS, Emergency Management Services and Department of Mineral Resources were all present at the park over the past three days.

Basil Douglas ,ward 68 councillor, said more people are being taken out from the mine pit.

“We feel for them because they are desperate and unemployment and poverty is rife in the community.

“Nevertheless if the law is broken then one should face the consequences,” said Douglas.

Lieutenant Kay Makobela who is the spokesperson for the SAPS said one body was found dead this morning.

“An unfortunate situation happened and a formal inquiry will be opened for investigation.

“The rescue mission that has been going on overnight has yielded results but is still continuing,” said Makobela.

A resident bystander Ruth O’Neil said she feels that there should be a reasonable punishment for the perpetrators.

“Even though unemployment is a problem one should not consider breaking the law to make ends meet,” said O’Neil.

Douglas also stated that the rumours are, some government officials are involved in the operation.

“This has not been confirmed but there are rumours that some government officials are involved in the operation and they should be investigated,” said Douglas.

Rescue operations are still currently underway.
