Heritage month kicked off with a schools’ art competition

Orlando high schools kicked off Heritage month with an art competition this past Friday. Titled Schools’ Art Competition 2016, the competition was held at the Selelekela High School and other participating schools were Bona Secondary School and Lofense Girls High.

The competition showcased the artistic talent of the youngsters.  Pupils from participating schools had their work exhibited on the day and judged by experts in the field of arts.

Tintswalo Sambo, a teacher at Selelekela high said the competition was all about discovering and nurturing young talent.

In addition to bragging rights, winners received trophies as well as part of their prizes.

“We have a lot of hidden talent in our schools when it comes to the arts. So today we decided to have this competition where pupils from various schools come together and showcase their talents,” said Sambo.

Lebogang Mathebula’s portrait of Marilyn Monroe was a hit with the judges and the audience. The portrait secured Mathebula a spot in the lit of the top winners.

Another artist who impressed both the audience and the judges was Siyabonga Buthelezi which is a piece titled “Best of both worlds.”

The organisers aim to make the event even bigger and better next year and hope to draw more participants. Bukgosi Tombstones, a local business sponsored the competition by donating trophies for the winners.
