Miss Heritage Gauteng take kids down memory lane

Heritage Month is all about raising awareness about the rich history and heritage this country has for Miss Heritage Gauteng.

Children from disadvantaged backgrounds were taken on a historical tour of the Mandela House Museum this past Sunday. Thanks to Miss Heritage Gauteng Sherianne Pillay kids from Frank’s Heaven kicked off their Heritage Month in style.

The visit to the museum forms part of Pillay’s community outreach programme and work as Miss Heritage Gauteng. Kids were given a guided tour of the house which was home to the first democratically elected president of this country and father of the nation. Pillay who seems more than passionate about the history and heritage of this country said her work this month will be focused educating kids about the rich history and heritage this country has.

“I just feel that South Africa has  very rich history and heritage. I think that it is up to me as a representative of the youth of South Africa to make sure that the next generation knows about this rich history and heritage” said Pillay.

The tour guide at the museum is a veteran of the 1976 Soweto student uprising who gave the kids a  low down of how their freedom was obtained.

After that brief history lesson, she took them inside the house and showed them around starting from the main bedroom. Kids listen attentively and with interest as the guide explained to them about every item displayed in the house before posing for selfies.

The visibly excited Pillay said, “It gives me the fulfilment that through such outreaches and charity work, I’m enlightening the next generation about our heritage and history as South Africa.”

Pillay strongly believes that it is important to take kids out on these tours not only because it helps them relax but because that’s the only way our story as a country can live on.
