Comfortable sitting and resting lounges at Chris Hani Baragwanath

The Ronald McDonald House of Charities (RMHC) has two family rooms in Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital that is purposed to harbour mothers with critically ill children in Intense Care Unit (ICU) or going through surgery.

The family rooms are built to help parents manage the stress of their children being critically ill, the rooms are fitted with resting lounges, comfortable sitting areas and provides breakfast, lunch and an encouraging environment for the parents to bond among themselves.

Louise Shababngu gave birth to a premature baby six days ago and she has to visit the hospital every day to be with her baby, she said, “If the family rooms didn’t exist I’d always be waiting outside on the pavements to see my child.”

They open at 8am to 6pm, the chairperson of RHMC Reggie Skhosana said, “RMHC has become a charity of choice and we would like the public to know about it so that desperate mothers can access it.”

The family rooms work closely with the hospital and can harbour up to a hundred parents a day
