Weekend full of Gunshots and Shootouts in Westbury

Residents are tired and fearing the lives of their children due to the unexpected shootings in Westbury.

A scurry of shooting events once again occurred over the past weekend terrifying residents from Westbury with some asking whether the Sophiatown Police Station is doing enough regarding the situation.


Some of the incidents include:

  • Friday night 7.30pm: Shooting in Newclare where a man was injured near Tamboekie Court.

Gun shots were fired in a massive shootout with no deaths or arrests reported.

  • Friday night 8.30pm: Shootout in Percy Peffer Street and Westbury Flats.

Two VW Golf’s turned up and started firing at each other near a bottle store, where guys were standing, corner of Oleander and Percy Peffer Street. The cars fired at each other with children having to run into their homes because of the crossfire bullets between them.

  • Saturday night 9.30pm: Shootout in Kretschmar Avenue and at the flats in Westbury.

A boy aged between 20-24 years was severely injured and taken to the hospital.One flat resident, who does not want to be named, said the boy was not involved in the shooting but was caught in the crossfire.

“He was badly hit because he tried getting out of the way because the shooting was unexpected,” she said.

  • Sunday afternoon: Shootout in Dowling Avenue opposite Newclare Flats.

Several shots were fired in a shootout between two different gangs.No severe injuries were reported.


A resident Cheryl Barnes said they are tired of living in fear. “The police station has not been helpful and we really fear the lives of our children.

“Something has to be done urgently,” said Barnes.

The police station was unavailable for comment.
