Shootings and crime on an increase in Westbury

Westbury's crime and shootings are still on the rise.

Shootings and other murder related crimes have been on an increase over the weekend creating fear amongst residents in the Westbury area.

Two of the incidents are:

  • In the early hours of Sunday morning the 30th of July, a man was beaten to death by a group of men at a new pub/nightclub called “Blended” in Newclare near the Westbury Train Station.

According to a witness who does not want to be named but was standing nearby, she said the man went to help his brother but was caught in the fight.

The paramedics declared him dead on the scene but his brother was taken to hospital.

Colonel Julia Claassen from Sophiatown Police Station said no arrests have been made.

“We are still busy with further investigations and need the public to come forward if they know anything about the incident,” said Claassen.

  • Gunshots were heard in the Newclare area with as much as three people getting injured in the process

The areas at which the shooting occurred were in Tamboekie Court in Westbury and the Newclare Flats near the train station.

These incidents occurred on Sunday  night, 30th July, and Monday morning, 1st August, respectively.

Claassen said there have been no arrests made as well regarding the shootings

“One of the men that were shot on Monday is currently receiving medical attention because he attained some lower body injuries.

“We are investigating both cases but once again plead with the community to come forward anonymously to catch the perpetrators involved,” said Claassen.

Community stakeholders and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) have also urged residents to come forward with investigation stating that the police cannot do it without the communities assistance.
