Mayor unveils Lufhereng housing development

Housing is an important asset to anybody that has the right of ownership.

The City of Johannesburg executive mayor, Parks Tau, unveiled another integrated housing development in Lufhereng, west of Soweto.

The R690 million housing developments represent a radical housing delivery shift as articulated in the government’s “Breaking New Ground” policy.

It is expected to yield a total of 22 850 housing units by 2023.

Tau described the development as “a step towards the transformation of the city’s discriminatory apartheid spatial legacies “.

“Through policy and the city spatial redesign programme, the Corridors of Freedom, we seek to redress these spatial injustices and stimulate a more varied housing market that meets the needs of the people of Johannesburg,” he said.

On completion, Lufhereng will consist of 8 960 subsided housing units.

The other housing alternative includes 7 722 bonded homes and properties under the Finance Linked Individual Subsidy Programme and 6 150 high-density apartments.

Of 8 960 subsidized units, 1 832 have already been completed and occupied.

Part of the Lufhereng housing development includes Joburg Social Housing Company’s construction of 407 units on two multi-storey and high-density walk-up blocks.

These will accommodate families with gross income ranging from R2 500 to R7 500 per household a month.
