Kliptown residents take their frustrations to the streets

Residents shut down Kliptown in demand of service delivery.

Kliptown is on lockdown today as residents protest over the lack of service delivery. Police have used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Residents reiterated by throwing stones at the police. Amongst other things residents are complaining about is the lack of housing and employment opportunities for young people.

“Our problems will be solved the day we get a counsellor who comes from Kliptown who knows what it’s like to live in a shack. We are tired of councillors from Dlamini who don’t understand our needs,” said one angry resident

. The railway line and roads were barricaded with rocks and burning tires causing a huge traffic backlog in the area. Almost all businesses in the area are none operational at the moment. Residents have vowed to continue with their protest until authorities come and address them.
