Train commuters urged to be vigilant at stations

Crime rocketing at train stations.

Metrorail has issued a warning about the criminal activities happening in most of its stations in the Naledi and Vereeniging route.

Some of the stations which have been marked as crime hotspots include Naledi, Midway and Kliptown Stations and commuters are warned to be extra careful at such stations.

The agency spokesperson Amanda Nyaluza said: “We have received many complaints about the above-mentioned stations and the only thing that we want our commuters to do is to be careful when at such stations.

“Commuters, especially woman must hold tight their handbags and hide their cellphones and always make sure that they don’t seat alone at the platform or they don’t ride in an empty coach because that is dangerous and that’s when they are vulnerable and become targets of criminals.”

Nyaluza said that they will do their bid as the agency to make sure that the crime does not spread to other station.

“We have beefed up security by employing patrollers at our stations and installing CCTV cameras to monitor every situation at the station and so far according to the report we received, 7 men have been arrested for crimes such as armed robbery and theft.”
