Jozi bread launched

City of Joburg introduces a healthy and cheap alternative to normal bread.

Johannesburg City mayor Parks Tau accompanied by members of the mayoral committee launched Jozi Bread in Pimville on Thursday morning.
The Jozi Bread project is an initiative by the City of Joburg aimed at responding to the issue of food security while promoting a healthy lifestyle for residents of the city.
Jozi bread is a healthy alternative to normal bread and t is more affordable at R7.50 per loaf. It is baked with normal flour mixed proceeded flour made from mango. The use of mango flour gives the bread unique fruity taste.
“This is our response to the challenge of lifestyle diseases which we face as the City of Johannesburg. We have identified that the bread we eat has a high sugar and salt counted.
“To solve these problems we did our research which resulted in this bread which uses processed flour from mango,” said Tau.
The Jozi Bread initiative is not only about healthy eating but it is about creating employment opportunities as well.
The city trained about 70 bakers on the use of processed mango flour to work on the project. The project is expected to benefit a number of local cooperatives as well.
“Today we are ready to eat our locally made Jozi Bread,”  said the Mayor.
