Drug raids in Westbury

MEC of Community Safety says she wants drug problem to stop

MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane yesterday visited Westbury areas notorious for drugs.

She was accompanied by Johannesburg Traffic Police Saturation Unit, Sophiatown police, provincial government officials and some Johannesburg Metro Police Department staff.

Some of the areas that she visited included Circle Court, Florida Avenue, the Westbury Flats, Waterval and Newclare.

Colonel Kobus Lategan, acting cluster commander, also accompanied the group around Westbury.

According to the Malobane three people were arrested on possession of drugs.

“The purpose of this raid was to identify areas that are drug prone and to try our best to get rid of the perpetrators.

“Unfortunately we did not find much but we can deem it a success because of the awareness created of the situation,” said Malobane.

The local Community Policing Forum also accompanied the officials under the guidance of chairperson Tully Michaels.

Malobane said there would be more raids at end of July, the end of August and the end of September.

“I want to come back to this community because I feel there is a need for these raids and if the raids are not done then the problem will escalate,” said Malobane.
