Warm winter ahead

The Rotary Club made a generous donation of blankets to a local school in Meadowlands.

Sivelile Primary School recently got their winter season made warmer with a donation made by the Rotary Club from Morningside Johannesburg.

“We are very familiar with the school and happy with the way the school is run; Wilson Mdau who used to work at the club approached me and told me about what he was doing for the school and I was impressed by his initiative, we too wanted to do something for them,” said Denise Cruickshank a member of the club.

Wilson Mdau, now retired, used to work for the Rotary Club, and seeing vacant land on the premises of the school he decided to transform it into a vegetable garden that would provide food for the children during the day.

The Rotary Club inspired by his initiative followed suit and added the school to their Blanket Drive campaign carried out provincially.

Ntombi Mohlabai, the principle said, “We would like to thank the club for taking care of our needy learners. This partnership started in 2013 and it has been smooth sailing ever since.”

73 blankets were donated by the club this year to the underprivileged children who are identified by the school annually.

Cruickshank said, “Rotary is a worldwide service organisation that does charitable things for worthwhile initiatives and for the last four years, we have donated 70-80 blankets to the school per year.”

“We are so delighted that the club can do this for us, every year more children are added to our list of the underprivileged, but they welcome the chance to give to more; parents always come to express their gratitude to us, but the real thanks go to Mdau for telling the club about us,” said Mohlabai.
