Community feels failed by EMS

Two people who were trapped in the house were rescued by heroes from the community.

A family was left with nothing after a fire swept through their home on Thursday morning.

“At around 7am my neighbour’s house was on fire, we immediately contacted the emergency management services (EMS) in Freedom Park”.

“Neighbours started putting the fire out while we waited for EMS,” Matty Klien, a resident said.

Two people who were trapped in the house were rescued by heroes from the community.

The mother of the house sustained burns to her face and is still barfing a black substance, according to Klein.

After 45 minutes, the fire was put out by relentless efforts from the community, a fire engine then arrived.

“We even sent two cars to the fire station for the to get help but were told that one of the fire engines didn’t have hosepipes, the other didn’t have water,” Klein said.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said it’s not possible that a fire engine is without a hosepipe.

“Water should be at certain levels with a minimum of 1500 litres and maximum of 3500 litres in a fire engine.

“If there aren’t fire hydrants in the area or enough water in the fire engine, it has to be filled up at another location,” explained Maluadzi.

He said that he would look into the allegations.

Residents were taken and treated to a nearby clinic for smoke inhalation.
