Back to the City Festival

Freedom Day graced with the Back To The City Festival.

Back to the City Festival was packed this past Freedom Day after it graced Newtown for the tenth annual celebration of the show.
Starting off the show with an inspiring and fulfilling music workshop, the show featured some of SA’s biggest hip hop acts with the likes of HHP, Kwesta, Reason and more, the show was sure to reaffirm the dominance of the genre to music lovers.
Featuring more than five live acts and more than 10 DJs, the show catered for all tastes in the hip hop music spectrum with DJ Dimplez, DJ Speedsta and C-live headlining the show on decks.
The music workshop brought more meaning to the fun and entertainment, pulling together youth and all streams of business in the music world into one vicinity to exchange information.
Keynote speakers included a representative from AMG Media Distributing Company, Oskido, DJ Sbu and Lesiba Maja from Mogodumo I.T.
The biggest outcome of the workshop was sharing useful information, networking and gaining pointers on different ways one can make it in the media industry.
The biggest point highlighted was that of access and penetration into mainstream media using your own unique talent.
“There is no set formula on how to make it but everyone who has spoken today has mentioned the fact that no one knows their time to shine but the trick is to never give up on your dreams no matter how hard things may be”, said DJ Sbu.
“Even though you can make it big in the media but there are two important things to note, the first is to make sure that you find a way of staying relevant and find different ways of reinventing yourself.
“The second thing is the fact that there is no unity in the South African Musical landscape and that makes it even harder for upcoming artists to get absorbed mainstream, so as music lovers and legends, an appeal is make to unite
“Another important thing is the fact that music has the power to influence people, especially the youth so its worth considering the kind of messages we portray and how we want to shape up coming generations,” said Oskido.
“Financial mismanagement is one of the biggest downfalls to ones’ career regardless of you being an upcoming star or a celebrity, investing and saving for the future is something we all need as South African,” said Lesiba Maja .
