Crime Fighters here to stay

Although they have received threats, Crime Fighters say they won’t be intimidated.

The crime fighters in Extension Nine held a meeting with residents where they gave feedback on some of the tasks they have taken up.
Besides patrolling the group also address service delivery and social issues.
“It’s important that we realise the situation and environment that we live in,” Vincent Naidoo, the chairperson of Crime Fighters said.
Naidoo said according to statistics, Sector One has the highest number of crimes, however crime in Extension Nine has been drastically reduced since patrollers took charge.
Their model of crime fighting is now being used as an example in other areas like Florida and Mondeor.
Crime Fighters still need manpower.
“There are about 5000 houses in Extension Nine but we can’t get 100 men to patrol.
“If we get more people, each person would only need to patrol once a month,” Naidoo said.
The long hours of patrolling takes a toll on the patrollers as they sometimes patrol up until 5am, some of them still go to work.
Crime Fighters have also been threatened and have had their properties vandalised.
“This won’t stop us, it isn’t easy but we aren’t going anywhere,” said Naidoo.
He encourages residents to take their communities back by patrolling their streets.
“Start by forming whatsapp groups,” he said.
