International Women’s Day invites everyone to #PledgeForParity

International Women's Day commemoration seeks to recognise the role of women in society.

March 8 is a day where the world celebrates International Women’s Day (IWD).

It culminates from the 1908 strike by women who were working in the textile industry in United States.

IWD is dedicated at celebrating and recognising women’s contribution in politics, economics, social and various other spheres.

The advent of democracy in this country has allowed women to play a more active role in society without oppression.

Even though a lot has been done to give women the respect and recognition they deserve in this country, a lot more still needs to be done.

The theme for this year’s IWD is, “Pledge for parity.”

This theme speaks to individuals from all walks of life to make a commitment in ensuring gender equality.

This year, men and women are encouraged to play their role in achieving gender parity. Gauteng finance MEC Barbara Creecy has wished all women in this province a happy IWD.

“Today is especially significant for South Africa as it falls in the year of our 60th anniversary of the women’s march to the Union Buildings,” said Creecy when she was delivering her budget speech at the provincial legislature on Tuesday morning.

She paid tribute to women like Charlotte Maxeke, Lillian Ngoyi, Hellen Joseph and many others who participated in the struggle for the liberation of this country.

“These women set a powerful example of personal courage and fortitude in the face of adversity and they led with humility and selflessness,” she said.

This year, IWD invites us all to make a pledge and ensure that gender parity is achieved.
