Gauteng welcomes over 300 leap day babies

300 to celebrate their birthdays on either 28 February or 1 March.

The Gauteng Department of Health welcomed 301 babies born on Leap Day, 29 February, in all the provincial hospitals.

The hospitals delivered 148 girls and 153 boys and, among the new-borns there were about six set of twins born at Charlotte Maxeke Academic (two set of twins) and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic, Dr George Mukhari Academic and Jubilee Hospitals (two set of twins).

Gauteng MEC for Health, Qedani Mahlangu, congratulated parents on the milestone of giving birth on the Leap Day.

“Giving birth is milestone every parent looks forward to and, to give birth on special day like Leap Day or Christmas Day or New Year’s Day is extra special.

“Mothers, look after your babies and follow the road to health guide to the letter,” said Mahlangu.

Many parents, especially first time mothers said the day was exceptional as they gave birth to their first babies.

However, Leap Day did not mean much to them and many said they intend to celebrate their child’s birthday every year on either 28 February or 1 March every year.
