CoJ to go green

Global financial investment firm pledges more than R120 million into the corridors of freedom programme.

Executive Mayor for the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) Parks Tau announced a multi-million investment partnership on Wednesday.

The partnership is between the City and the Global Environmental Fund as part of the redesign programme called the corridors of freedom.

The corridors of freedom will change current entrenched settlement patterns of the City made up by urban sprawl and uncontrolled spread of low-density developments on the fringes of the City to high-density developments and environments made up of a mixture of residential space with office, accommodation, retail, leisure and recreational opportunities.

The fund is a global financial investment firm and has pledged more than R120 million to the programme.

Tau said, “The joint partnership is committed to providing a strong, habitat and sustainable urban environment.

“The Rea Vaya system, our award-winning Fleurhof development and the launch of a new green fleet of metro buses are just some of the programme’s flagship examples.

“This investment is a partnership and vote of confidence in the corridors of freedom programme that is set to contribute towards greenhouse emission reductions in Joburg.”
