Syndicate bust in Chiawelo

Chiawelo man arrested for allegedly manufacturing counterfeit notes.

Moroka Police officers put a stop to a syndicate manufacturing counterfeit money in Chiawelo.

A 59-year-old man from Chiawelo was arrested by station officers for allegedly selling fake money and being involved in manufacturing counterfeit notes.

According to the station communications officer Lukha Khoza, the man was in possession of fake money amounting to R61 500 at the time of his arrest.

“After the man was arrested we followed the lead and found out that the money was manufactured at Hillbrow where they also sell the fake money which is used to buy at shops where the owners are not aware or not sure how to spot fake money.

“It is reported that you can buy a fake R200 note with R50 or R30.”

Khoza said this came to their attention last week when a woman went to complain at the station after she sold her bakkie for R40 000.

“The woman sold her car for R40 000 and she was paid in cash with fake money and she only became aware of this after she went to deposit the money into the bank and that’s when she was told the money was fake.

“Then she came to open a case of fraud and that’s when we decided to investigate further,” Khoza said.

“We are following every lead that comes to the station and very soon we will put an end to this syndicate before it spreads to other areas and becomes uncontrollable.”
