Union denies striking

SAMWU accuses Pikitup of dividing workers.

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) has denied reports that its members who are employed by Pikitup embarked on an illegal strike.

The union said this in a press briefing yesterday (Monday) morning.

Six shop stewards were charged with misconduct and were due for a disciplinary hearing last week. The union claim that these charges are illegal and label them as a ploy by Pikitup to divided workers.

“When the date and time of the illegal disciplinary hearing were communicated, members presented themselves there as witnesses to the disciplinary case.

“We are therefore concerned that in their quest to divide workers, Pikitup and the media mischievously decided to call this an illegal strike,” SAMWU said.

The charges of misconduct emanates from a dispute between the union and Pikitip over conversion of some posts from contract to permanent.

The union is still calling for charges against Pikitup managing director Amanda Nair to be reinstated.
