Police arrest over a 1000 people for various crimes

Gauteng police working hard to combat crime in communities.

Gauteng police have seized more than a million litres (1680112) of alcohol, 6245 grams of drugs including dagga and methcathinone (CAT) and eighteen (18) firearms during crime prevention operations.

1098 suspects were also arrested for various crimes including possession of drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, house-breaking and theft, assault, murder, malicious damage to property and illegal immigration.

The suspects were due to appear at the various Magistrates’ Courts.

According to lieutenant colonel Lungelo Dlamini, the suspects were arrested during crime prevention operations conducted by the police, Metro police and Gauteng Traffic officers.

Dlamini said some of the suspects were arrested when police were responding to complaints and routine patrol in their sectors.

Out of the total number of the arrests, several suspects were arrested for the following crimes:

–          77 for being in possession of drugs

–          135 for assault cases

–          154 for illegal immigration

–          62 for drinking in public

–          37 for driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs

–          92 for theft

–          31 for housebreaking and theft

–          15 for possession of stolen property,

–          12 for rape cases, and

–          10 for armed robbery

Dlamini said other suspects were arrested for attempted murder, common robbery, fraud, and offences such as driving without a driver’s licence, illegal dealing in liquor and reckless or negligent driving.

Police are also appealing to the public to continue reporting suspicious people and vehicles.
