Space troubles continue at schools in Westside

Shortage of teachers and late registration cause for overcrowding of classrooms.

The situations of space at schools in Westside schools have spiralled out of control especially at primary schools.

According to Sheldon Maconi principal of Westbury Primary School and Doctor Been Robinson principal of Westbury Secondary School, the ones not having space are individuals that have registered late.

“Problem is that parents have not registered their children when registration was open last year.

“All children that registered when registration was open were accepted and have started learning,” said Maconi.

Robinson mentioned that classes especially in Grade Eight are overcrowded.

“We have over populated some classes and numbers in classes have gone in access of over 40.

“This is a problem when it comes to teaching but we don’t have a choice to accommodate all the pupils,” said Robinson.

Maconi has highlighted the process of late registration if schools are unable to assist.

“Parents must go to Bree Primary in Mayfair West where the department has stationed an office.

“They will however, check your profile, schools you have applied and thereafter negotiate with the closest school.

“A letter will be issued unto you to the school allocated and space will be allocated for your child,” said Maconi.

Robinson added that secondary school applicants can go to the education district for assistance.

“The district will not disadvantage the pupil by placing him/her in a school not in the area.

“Procedures will be explained to the parent and the district will provide assistance if need be,” said Robinson.
