Mayor supports 16 days of activism

City appeals to every residents to participate and play their role in condemning the violence against women and children and elderly people too.

The City of Johannesburg has shifted its focus to the violence against women and children as well as elderly as it officially launched its 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

Commemorated internationally, the campaign is held every year from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day).

It includes World Aids Day on December 1.

The Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development Nonceba Molwele said: “Locally, this year’s campaign will be held under the theme Count Me In – Together Moving a Non-Violent South Africa Forward.

“We appeal to every residents to participate and play their role in condemning the violence against women and children and elderly people too”

City of Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau said: “We will be having pilots campaigns around the city and we wan to inspire, educate and motivate people to be vocal when it comes to the protection of children and women out there.

“Actually we are aiming for a zero tolerance towards this social issue because it does not affect the people it happens to only, but the entire nation gets hurts every time a child or a woman is abused.”

Molwele said that in Region D will kick off its campaign with a roving community workshop on November 26 at Motsoaledi.

“The workshop, will also be hosted at the Orlando Skills Centre on December 2 and at the Oppenheimer Hall on December 8 and it will focus on gender-based and domestic violence.

“The abuse of the elderly will also be discussed at the Phiri Day Care Centre on December 3 and we want people to attend these events and learn a thing or two.
