10 Million Rand project underway in Jabulani

Kholwani Primary School to get a major facelift.

The Department of Basic Education with the Department of Infrastructure Development are rebuilding a portion of Kholwani Primary School in Jabulani.

The project came in response to a proposal that had been submitted in previous years which the Department of Basic Education responded to this year.

The initial project was meant to be a renovation project where older classes at the school had to be renovated and repaired.

As the first part of the project had begun, the engineers from Thobile M Construction Company found that the structure was too old and weak to be renovated and suggested that the section of the school be re-built entirely.

“The initial budget for the project was R 10.8 million but there have been some changes to the initial proposal after we learnt that the school has to be rebuilt from scratch.

“The project consists of two blocks which include classes, a library, a computer lab, new toilets, a storage room, a hall and a kitchen.

“Pupils are currently housed in seven mobile classrooms while the new building is expected to consist of seven new, bigger classrooms.

“The timeline that was originally set for completing the project was the end of this year but it seems as though that too has to be revised as there have been changes to the project,” said Ntokozo Nkosi, the community liaison officer of the project.

“The school was identified by the GDE for major rehabilitation and referred to the Department of Infrastructure Development, for implementation.

“Construction started last year November 2014, and is expected to be completed by June 2016.

The department has invested almost R150 million for upgrades and renovations at schools across Gauteng, particularly for sanitation facilities,” said The Department of Education Spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane.
