Mothers locked up for negligence

Residents fed up with lack of help from police.

A flat that was allegedly used as a lolly lounge was closed down and two mothers were arrested for child neglect, after an alleged hijacking went wrong.

According to the deputy chairperson of the Eldorado Park Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) a man was hijacked in Extension Five and taken to a flat in Extension One.

The man jumped through a window from the second floor to escape being beaten in the flat.

When police arrived, after the LDAC, several people were taken into custody.

Three underage children were found in the flat and have since been taken to a place of safety.

Two mothers and three others who were found in the flat were arrested.

Residents allege that they reported the illegal activities taking place at the flat to police on numerous occasions but received no help.

Acting station commander, Colonel Peter Van Dyk told residents to report police.

“Take the van number, registration number or even a photo of the van and report it to me.

“We are meant to protect you so if you see police who aren’t doing that, report them,” Van Dyk told residents.

The doors to the flat of the lolly lounge have since been sealed and the matter has been handed to the housing department.
