Helen Joseph Hospital runs out of water

Water restrictions might lead to infections increasing.

The Helen Joseph Hospital is struggling as it has run out of water because of a water restrictions in the area.

Non-emergency operations have had to be cancelled and other crucial activities are affected.

Rachel Britz, a Westside resident says she came to the hospital at 6am today for renal dialysis, which she has to do three times a week.

“I was told that it would be delayed as there is no water.

“There are water tanks to help but they can’t compensate for the lack of piped water,” said Britz.

“Hygiene will suffer and infections could increase,” said Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng Shadow for Health Jack Bloom.

He said, “It is hugely distressing for both staff and patients.

“We need an emergency water plan to ensure that hospitals have a reliable water supply throughout this water crisis period.”
