4.4 million Joburg residents receive water daily

Johannesburg residents are urged to continue using water sparingly.

Last week, Johannesburg Water (JW) held a media briefing at their head office situated at 17 Harrison Street, Marshalltown Johannesburg.

Media houses were briefed on the entity’s response to the climate conditions and the expectations of its customers, water supply, service interruptions and interventions and different platforms it uses to communicate with customers.

According to JW external communications officer, Eleanor Mavimbela, 2522 JW employees work hard to deliver quality service to over 4.4 million customers in the City of Johannesburg.

Regarding the supply of water by JW, Mavimbela said the entity ensures that over 4.4 million Johannesburg residents have quality water coming out of their taps.

This supply happens by use of distribution channels which consist of a network of 11 896 km of water pipes, 122 reservoirs and water towers and 35 water pump stations which are placed strategically throughout the City.

“Once we have distributed water, we then collect the waste water via 11 786 km of sewer network and 37 sewer pump-stations.

“On average we supply 1880 litres of water per property per day including fire-fighting storage backup,” she said.

Mavimbela said: “Johannesburg Water treats 973 mega-litres of sewage every-day, which can fill a dam four times the size of Emmarentia Dam, at its six waste water treatment works.”

In the case of high temperatures worsening the drought in rainfall, Mavimbela said the Department of Water and Sanitation would issue an instruction by decree to impose limits in water supply.

This is meant to save more water and to have enough water for supply to customers till there’s some rainfall in the region.

City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality are currently experiencing water problems.

“Context is everything in this matter and care should be exercised not to unnecessarily cause alarm as rainfall or lack thereof is not solely determined by El Nino and the SSTs of the Pacific Region, there are about 400 other parameters which determine rainfall patterns,” said Mavimbela.

Johannesburg residents are urged to continue using water sparingly.
