Residents angered over service delivery

Condition of the road has worsened and not fixed for over 15 years.

A storm water drain in Sand Street Riverlea Extension one has worsened over the past few weeks with little help received from Johannesburg Roads Agency.

This has caused cracks in the road of Sand Street and when it rains the whole road is flooded.

According to the Ward Councillor Basil Douglas the situation has been left untouched for 15 years.

“Cars have struggled to ride past this area and we have received no help.

“We really need government to act because our people are suffering under these conditions,” said Douglas.

One resident Charles Lyndberg has expressed his disappointment.

“The road is filled with potholes and uneven surfaces causing minor accidents because children are also utilising the road.

“This problem has not been attended to for long and it’s about time government does something about it,” said Lyndberg.

The councillor has sent out a questionnaire to the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Johannesburg Roads Agency asking when it will be attended to but according to Douglas they have received no real assistance.

“I think this is an act of irresponsibility, violation of human rights and negligence,” said Douglas.

Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Scheepers said they will try and address the situation as soon as possible.

“Our engineer will do an on-site investigation at Sand Street and determine a way forward.

“The matter will be resolved as soon as possible,” said Scheepers.
