Watch: Noordgersig Primary in hot water over circumcision saga

Parents urged to be extra cautions when sending children for circumcision.

The National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB) will on Friday convene a meeting with parents and teachers at Noordgersig Primary School to discuss the circumcision saga.

Parents staged a stand outside the school on Monday and Tuesday demanding answers from the principal after their children were allegedly assaulted at a circumcision centre in Fleurhof, Roodepoort.

The school had organised for a group of 40 boys to go for circumcision on Friday last week. Parents signed consent forms allowing their children to go.

When they signed consent forms, they thought their children were going to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital but ended up in a RDP house in Fleurhof.

Pupils were picked up from the school on Friday morning and were suppose to come back that afternoon.

There was panic amongst parents when their children were not returned until dark.

They were only returned in the early hours of Saturday morning. Only two out of 40 boys were circumcised.

A representative from the NASGB urged a group of angry parents who were camping outside the school on Wednesday not to resort to violence.

She promised them that the Friday meeting will find a solution to the matter.

Dr Lisa Mulenga from the Society for Family Health (SFH) which manages New Start Clinics urged parents to be extra cautious when sending their children for circumcision.

“It is the responsibility of the parent to verify the legality of the circumcision centre they are sending their children to.

“Parents are also welcome to accompany their children to the clinic when going for circumcision,” said Mulenga.

New Start does organise circumcision trips for schools but only for boys above 15 years of age.

Mulenga said, “We encourage parents to properly read the consent forms before signing. We also sent our representatives to their homes to further explain if there’s anything they don’t understand.

“Consent forms should be returned with an ID copy of the parent and affidavit attached. This is done to protect the child and the parent.”

She concluded by encouraging parents to visit the New Start Clinic situated in Baragwanath Hospital for help.
