Crime prevention tips for rape

Rape statistics decrease, but abuse does not stop.

Although statistics show that sexual offences have decreased in the past three years, rape is still a major issue in many communities.

In Protea Glen, sexual offences decreased from 95 in 2013, 89 in 2014 and 85 in 2015.

Eldorado Park crime statistics also show a decrease of sexual offences for the past three years from 142 in 2013, 130 in 2014 and 104 in 2015.

Protea SAPS has released the following crime prevention tips for rape because “although statistics have dropped, anyone could be prey and fall victim of sexual abuse”.

You have the right to say NO.

  • No one has the right to force you into sexual activity, no matter what your relationship with this person is.
  • This means no-one can force you to have sex, or to touch you in a sexual way without your consent, or force you to perform sexual activities you find unpleasant or humiliating.
  • Be open with your parents, female school teachers or your friend if you came across or were made to, or asked to have sexual intercourse with a man without your consent.
  • Never hitch-hike.
  • Do not walk alone at night.
  • Do not accept an offer from anybody.
  • Remember it is not your fault if you are sexually assaulted.
  • Do not allow anyone to touch you in a way that makes you uncomfortable.
  • Be firm and clear and say NO! You have the right to say so.
  • Do not leave a party or social event with someone you do not know or have just met.
  • At social events, do not leave your cold drinks or drinks unattended.
  • Avoid talking to strangers on social media and meeting them especially at night.
  • Ask friends to help you if you say NO!

In case of emergency call: 08600 10111, or send an anonymous crime tip-off on: 3221, you don’t have to mention your name!!! And you could save a lot of people’s life.
