Malebese and Albany commemorate #WorldFoodDay

October 16 is dedicated to fighting malnutrition and hunger.

October 16 is the day dedicated to turning the spotlight on the importance of nourishment and food across the world.

It is the day where the world commemorates World Food Day.

The day was proclaimed by the United Nations (UN) at the conference of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in 1979.

It is dedicated to raising awareness with regards to the problems the world faces when it comes to food.

It seeks to strengthen solidarity among nations and different people in the struggle against poverty and malnutrition which in most cases is a result of hunger.

Global warming which impacts negatively on agriculture is one of the contributing factors to food shortage and hunger.

According to the UN World Food Programme, about 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life and most of them are in the developing countries.

Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest number of people who suffer from undernourishment and hunger.

In Soweto, Albany Bakeries was commemorating this day at the African Children’s Feeding Scheme (ACFS) better known as Malebese in Zola.

They were promoting nutrition by giving food to underprivileged children.

The centre has a long relationship with Albany and the bakery has been donating bread and other essentials to the centre to fight hunger and malnutrition.

“We decided to spend time at Malebese feeding children and planting a vegetable garden for them this World Food Day.

“It is not about giving handout to children but it’s all about sustainability hence we planted vegetables which will be used at the centre,” said Obren Motswane from Sabio Communications which organised the event.

Motswane emphasised the importance of promoting nutrition among children not only on World Food Day but in the long run.

A lecture on nutrition, preserving of food, budgeting, food preparation and hygiene was given at the event as well.
