DA conducts inspections on school sites

Delays on school construction projects a concern to the DA.

Democratic Alliance Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education and MPL, Khume Ramulifho and DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Infrastructure Development and MPL, Alan Fuchs conducted an inspection at two schools under construction in Bramfischerville.

Khume said the purpose of the visit was to check construction progress and that schools meet the scheduled completion time frame.

He said the replacement of portable classrooms by the Department of Education and Department of Infrastructure Development is something the party supports.

“DA supports the construction of brick and water schools taking place in Bramfischer.”

Three school construction projects are currently underway in Bramfischer.

Khume said: “There was lack of planning when the RDP houses were constructed because schools should’ve been built at the same time.

“The delays taking place at some of these projects affect the progress since contractors end up asking for time frame extensions.”

Community Liaison Officer of the school project in Bramfischer Phase Four, Teboho Mokoena said delays at the Fikile Construction site were caused by unexpected strikes by labourers.

Mokoena said the project was to start on March 1 but only began in April.

He said it was projected the construction will be done around September but due to unforeseen challenges the project may be complete by December.

Despite the delays, the project has created 150 jobs for locals.

“There’s progress and I’m excited because the walls and roofing work is done – only little work remains,” said Mokoena.

MEC Fuchs said: “I welcome the infrastructure development in the area since the ratio of children to teachers is higher.

“Contractors must work to meet deadlines and the infrastructure department is responsible for ensuring just that.”

The MPLs also visited the construction site at Nkone Maruping Primary School where 120 local labourers are working.

The project handover was done on May 14 but construction commenced on August 22.

The original project completion is January 18.
