Safety first, President urges construction companies

Construction companies urged to take necessary precautions to protect workers and the public during the construction phase.

President Jacob Zuma has urged construction companies to avoid tragic accidents, following Wednesday’s bridge collapse on the M1 freeway in Sandton.

The bridge structure, which was being erected to enable the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the M1, collapsed killing three people and injuring over 20 people.

“President Zuma has also urged construction companies to always take necessary precautions to protect workers and the public during the construction phases to avoid such tragic accidents,” the Presidency said.

President Zuma extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and further wished those who were injured during the accident a speedy recovery.

He has directed the authorities to swiftly investigate the cause of the accident.

The construction company responsible for the bridge, Murray and Roberts, the Department of Labour and the City of Johannesburg have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Mop up operations are currently taking place and it is hoped that the highway will be reopened before the afternoon rush hour. – SAnews.gov.za
