Lesedi Private Hospital to get an upgrade and new name

Soweto's first private hospital renamed after renowned educationalist Solomon Kgokgophana Matseke.

The first black-owned private hospital in Soweto, the Clinix Lesedi Private Hospital will get a facelift and be renamed as the Dr Solomon Kgokgophana Matseke Memorial Hospital.

The hospital will get a major R230 million upgrade and this will be a tribute to the renowned teacher, administrator, writer and scholar.

The upgrade will commence immediately.

Once completed it will include a new state of the art 275 bed hospital with seven new operating theatres, a 20 bed ICU facility, a 14 bed neonatal ICU, seven bed paediatric ICU, 11 bed maternity ward.

Along with that a new radiology department, casualty, pharmacy, pathology laboratory,  new renal facilities, a nuclear medicine department as well as new doctors rooms, administration, kitchen and reception areas as well as a new road entrance.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Ayanda Ntsaluba, chairman of the Clinix Health Group Board said, “We are incredibly proud of the legacy we have created.

“Since Clinix Health Group was first established in 1992 with a clear purpose in mind to bring private healthcare to previously disadvantaged communities, our objective has been to ensure our hospitals remain cutting-edge, efficient and relevant for the needs of the communities.”

“These upgrades will ensure we can meet and exceed these expectations for the people we serve.

“Along with Lesedi, we are investing an additional R32.5m in upgrading three of our other properties, Clinix Naledi-Nkanyezi, Clinix Tshepo-Themba and Botshelong-Empilweni.

“We have just completed the upgrades at Clinix Naledi-Nkanyezi and Clinix Tshepo-Themba and the work at Clinix Botshelong-Empilweni will commence later this month to ensure all of our hospitals offer state of the art facilities and services.”

Commenting specifically on the name change, Dr KOP Matseke, CEO of Clinix Health Group said, “My late father was passionate about the community.

“Learning and teaching was the cornerstones of his life and through his commitment many people were motivated to study hard and grow as individuals.

“Among his former students are Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his wife Leah Tutu, Seepati Joan Mogotsi, Don Ncube, Peter Vundla, Mara Louw, Thabo Leshilo, Gordon Sibaya and Tokyo Sexwale.

“My father was also a dedicated family man playing a pivotal role and providing constant support for his family.

“He always said that family must come first.

“We believe the new name for the hospital is a fitting tribute to him.”
