Different shades of Simlet

Joburg Theatre on fire as Simlet tells the story of his life through music.

British actor Bill Nighy once said, “I did pick up a guitar once, but the strings hurt my fingers so I put it down again.”

Unlike Nighy, Simlet Sigidi from White City and Pimville Zone Four once picked up a guitar and never put it down.

If he were to put his guitar down now it would hurt the hearts of music and art lovers who have been mesmerised by his sounds.

To call Sigidi just a guitarist would be an understatement and an insult to him and the whole music fraternity.

Adding to the title of guitarist, he is a vocalist, songwriter and film music composer.

This past weekend Sigidi set Joburg Theatre on fire with his one man show titled, “Textures: The Start.” The magic he did with his guitar hypnotised the audience and left the whole room begging for more.

The show was not just about him performing his music but it was him telling the story of his life as a kasi boy who had a dream of gracing big stages like the Joburg Theatre.

“Basically the show was a showcase of my life and the music I have done and composed over the years,” he says.

This showcase was done in an unconventional way of doing things.

Poetry, contemporary dance, and different sounds were fused together to create something out of this world.

Even the title of the show was as artistic as the performance and Sigidi describes it as something that portrays different colours and shades of who he is.

The show brought together young and old art lovers under one roof regardless of different tastes that exists between generations when it comes to music.
