Horror camp

A week long study camp was short lived after parents removed their children from a campsite that was atrocious.

Matric girls who went on a study camp arranged by the department of education soon found themselves back at home after horrendous conditions at the venue forced them to leave.

According to Rashaad Le Roux, his daughter made contact with him on Sunday evening because the facility didn’t cater for Halaal eating pupils.

Parents were required to sign an indemnity form giving their children permission to go to a campsite in Magaliesburg but without any notification, children were taken to a so-called campsite in Cullinan.

The living conditions at the place are, according to a parent, not fit for anybody to stay.

“On the first night they fed the children pap with boiled chicken skin, most of the children threw their food away.

“When I arrived there on Tuesday morning, the same food was still in bins, the pots were filthy and there was a smell that was worse than a dead dog,”Anthia du Pont said.

Her daughter, Cazline du Pont survived on snacks they bought for the road trip to the place.

There are also allegations that there was a very little supply of water.

“There wasn’t enough water to shower, we had to get drinking water from a pot,” Cazline said.

She, along with four other girls, were allegedly called out of one of their classes to move their belongings from their room.

“They were told to move their stuff because the room they were staying in was paid for by someone else,” du Pont said.

Calzine and the other girls got a room at 8:30 that evening, they slept in a first-aid room on thin mattresses on the floor.

Parents who went to fetch their children to return home got lost, some of them arriving almost two days later, as they did not know where it was.

“We never gave permission for our children to go to Cullinan, we were told that our children will stay at a five-star place and will receive meals three times a day,” du Pont said.

The second group of matrics are scheduled to leave on Monday and parents are saying it would be better if they stay at home.

No response was received from the department of education at the time of publishing.
