Hijacking gone wrong

Police condemn mob justice after community assaults suspected hijacker.

A 28-year-old man is under police guard at Bheki Mlangeni Hospital in Jabulani after he was beaten to a pulp by residents of Zone Five in Pimville on Saturday last weekend.

According to police reports, the man and his two accomplices tried to hijack a couple who were driving to their home at gunpoint.

They were disrupted and ended up taking the woman’s cellphone and ran away with it.

Residents came to the rescue of the couple and apprehended one of the men.

They recovered the cellphone and started beating him up.

He was saved by the arrival of police who arrested and took him to hospital.

The other two men are still at large and police are hot on their heels.

Police have appealed to residents to refrain from practising mob justice.
