Elderly man (71) stabbed to death

Second murder in Sophiatown in a space of a month.

At about 3:10am on Wednesday September 30 a house burglary took place leaving one dead and one injured.

Two armed men allegedly broke into a house of an elderly couple killing the elderly man and injuring his wife.

Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch secured the crime scene and alerted Sophiatown SAPS at 6:05am via a patroller visiting the station to inform them.

According to Sophiatown police station warrant officer Jerbes De Bruyn, the deceased victim was stabbed three times.

“We were called to scene after the men fled.

“When we arrived at the scene, the elderly man was dead and his wife was severely strangled and had to be rushed to hospital,” said Steyn.

The two men fled from the scene before the police arrived.

The couple is said to be 71 and 73 years old respectively.

Jewellery and other valuables were taken from the house.

Chairman of the Sophiatown Community Watch Dauw Steyn said the last robbery occurred over four months ago.

“The last robbery was a minor incident.

“However this was the second murder in Sophiatown this month.

“We need SAPS to act now and address the huge drug problems of some of our surrounding neighbourhoods and this leads to crime in our areas,” said Steyn.

According to De Bruyn the case is being investigated and a search is active for the two men.
