Soweto Pride colours Ndofaya

The 11th annual Soweto Pride celebrated the LGBTI community in Meadowlands.

Thousands gathered at the Meadowlands Zone Two park for the Soweto Pride on September 26 to honour lesbians Sizakele Sigasa and Salome Masooa, among other victims, who were killed in hate crimes because of their sexuality.

The event themed “Our Lives Matter – Safety, Justice and Freedom are our rights”, began with speeches and a march followed by music, colour and festivities at the park.

A memorial was held in their honour at the location as it was where the brutal double murder of Sigasa and Masooa happened in 2007.

A plague and memorial bench that was placed at the park in their memory in 2009 was removed when the City renovated the park.

The Pride was started by the FEW (Forum for the Empowerment of Women) in 2004 in an attempt to create a political and social space for the LGBTI (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) community in the township, focusing particularly on black lesbian women.
