Uniting communities in the fight against crime

The ANC marched against police killings, crime and drug abuse on Saturday.

The African National Congress on Saturday mobilised residents from Eldorado Park and Freedom Park, uniting them in the call to end police killings, crime and drugs.

“We are fighting crimes that are ravaging our community.

“There is a strong increase of in drug use and abuse, robberies of malls, police killings and women and children abuse.

“We can’t just sit back, we need to be active, with our communities,” Richard Zulu, the zonal chairperson said.

Marchers walked from the fire station in Freedom Park to the Eldorado Park Police Station where they gave a memorandum to the acting station commander.

Chairperson if the Ward 18 branch, Allistair Fredericks said communities cannot be held ransom by a small group of people (criminals).

“If we could overcome apartheid, we can overcome the scourge our community faces but we need the support of our community, people who have the interest of the community at heart,” Fredericks said.

The three page memorandum states “We join all other communities of Gauteng province to reclaim our streets.

“We believe and are committed to a community free of crime and illegal drugs and which values its law enforcement agencies.”

When receiving the memorandum, acting station commander Colonel Van Dyk told marchers that he is committed to fighting crime.

“This must be a crime free zone.

“We sit discuss on a daily basis with provincial office to see what we can do to keep you safe,” Van Dyk said.
