House catches fire in Riverlea

No injuries reported after house catches fire.

A house on Ashburton Street in Riverlea caught fire at 3pm on Tuesday September 15.

No injuries or deaths were reported.

Faeeza Marshman who lives at the house expressed sadness at what happened.

“Well the main part that burnt was the top part of the house.

“There were people downstairs when the fire started but no one could notice that there was a fire upstairs,” said Marshman.

According to the family the fire was started due to an electrical fault but the reason is still being investigated.

Fire brigade was at the scene as well.

“When the fire brigade came, the fire was very high but the only problem was that they came without water.

“A second truck came and extinguished the fire but then it started again and they had to put it out again,” said Marshman.

Four families lived in the house, two upstairs and two downstairs. Water damage is the main problem downstairs.

“Everything we had in our bedrooms upstairs burnt out.

“As a family we are very heartbroken,” said Marshman.

The family is asking the community to assist in cleaning up of the house.

Any donations are also welcomed.
