Principal cleared by DoE but parents are not happy

Parents formed a team to investigate allegations against the principal at Tumelo Primary School in Meadowlands.

Parents of pupils at Tumelo Primary School formed their own task team to investigate allegations against the school’s principal and the School Governing Body electoral officers after the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) dismissed fraud allegations in June due to a lack of evidence.

Parents were not happy with the outcome of the investigation and as a result, formed their own team to re-investigate the matter.

The principal and electoral officers have been accused by parents of rigging the SGB elections.

This was allegedly done through forged documents which allowed non-parents to participate in the SGB elections.

The principal was also accused of mismanagement of the school and its staff.

The evidence gathered by parents was handed over to District 12 in August at the Department of Education’s request.

However, at the time of publishing, the department had not received the alleged evidence from the district and asked to be given more time to gather the documents.

In June the department cleared the principal of any wrong doing.

“The principal was not involved in conducting elections at the school. Allegations submitted against her could not be verified by our investigation team.

“The investigation team discovered irregularities in terms of procedures when elections were conducted. This led to the need for a re-run of the elections,” said Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane.

Parents have signed a petition in an attempt to remove the principal from her position.

“We as parents have the right to question the principal and the day-to-day running of the school but we’re deprived to do so by the principal.

“Our children’s education is compromised and the department must step in.” said a parent who did not want to be named.

The department said they’re still busy with the current investigation.

At the time of publishing a date for the next SGB elections had not been set.
