Housing development brings opportunities

Locals to get six months of work to earn a living.

There is progress in the social housing development in Dobsonville Extension Two at which the number of beneficiaries from the community is increasing daily.

At least by the end of September about 50 units will be complete.

Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) has given an opportunity to locals to benefit from the R52 million share, a quota of the R200 million budget for this housing project.

Councillor of Ward 48 Jacquire Lekgetho said the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) has assured a place for community workers to benefit from the project.

According to the South African Government website, EPWP is one of government’s arrays of programmes aimed at providing poverty and income relief through temporary work for the unemployed.

Lekgetho said through EPWP’s empowerment purposes, hundreds of people get hired for a period of three months.

She said a six month period was negotiated to allow community workers some time to generate income.

“If 147 people are hired today for a period of six months, it clearly means that after the period another group will replace them,” she said.

Lekgetho said exiting groups will be trained for further skills.

The project will create over 700 jobs for the locals.
