South Africa to host Commonwealth Games

Another historic moment for the country as it hosts the first Commonwealth Games on African soil.

Durban has been named hosts of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The announcement was made in a ceremony held in Auckland in New Zealand this morning.

This is a historic moment for the country and the entire African continent as it will be the first time these games will be held on African soil.

South Africa remained the only bidder to host these games after Canada withdrew from the race in February due to financial reasons.

eThekwini Municipal Manager Sibusiso Sithole said the City will build on the experience of hosting the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

“We hosted a few games during the World Cup which were successful. With the Commonwealth Games, most of the sporting codes will be played here in Durban,” he said.

The hosting of the Commonwealth Games in Durban is expected to have far reaching benefits for the country and the African continent.

Benefits will include with sports development, nurturing local talent and economic growth.
