SAMWU and Rand Water to meet in court over strike

Taps may run dry in some parts of Gauteng if the strike goes on.

Today the South African Municipal Worker’ Union (SAMWU) will picket outside the Labour Court in Johannesburg.

The picket is aimed at supporting the union members in their bid to go on a strike. The union threatened to go on strike after wage talks with the employer reached a deadlock early this week.

If the strike goes on it will be most detrimental to Rand Water  and affect water supply to major parts of Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

Rand Water went to the court to prevent the union from striking and the matter is set to be heard today.

SAMWU issued a statement yesterday  saying, “Our constitutional right to strike cannot be taken away by an arrogant and exploitative employer which does not value the work done by its employees.”
