Police condemn mob justice

Two men arrested for theft.

A mob justice incident that took place in Snake Park yesterday (August 19) has led to the arrest of two men suspected of stealing a TV.

The angry mob assaulted the men before police were alerted of the situation.

Police received a call from radio control informing them of a mob justice in Block One but the activity happened in Block Six next to RDP houses.

“Two police officers tried to rescue the men but the angry crowd didn’t want to cooperate,” said Dobsonville police spokesperson Mzwakhe Xazi.

Xazi said backup was called in as the crowd was moving – till they came to a halt at Block Nine.

It is alleged that in June, the two suspects broke into a house in Thulani where they stole items.

A complainant who opened a case of house breaking in June said the alleged men confessed to her that they stole the TV.

“The men were then rescued by the police from the mob and taken to Dobsonville SAPS – they are still at the station.”

They’re expected to appear before the magistrate court soon on charges of theft.

Police condemned the incident and urged residents not to take the law into their own hands.
