UPDATE: Mzimhlophe residents protest for electricity

Some parts of the area have been without electricity for a month.

Mzimhlophe Hostel dwellers took to the streets this morning to protest against electricity blackouts.

According to residents these blackouts have left some of them without electricity for a month now.

They barricaded Rev Frederick Modise Drive with stones and burning tyres forcing motorists to seek alternative routes out of the township.

Police were forced to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd but no injuries or arrests were reported.

Bhekisisa Mhlazi, hostel induna, said some parts of the area have been without electricity for a month now.

“We have been trying to engage with Eskom regarding the situation but our pleas have been falling on deaf ears.

“People have been left with no alternative but to take to the streets and protest,” said Mhlazi.

He went on to say Eskom should renew infrastructure and they don’t have a problem with paying for prepaid if they have to.

Protests started on Monday according to residents and they promised to go back to the streets if the problem is not resolved.

Police continue to monitor the area.
